Biology, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) Day
The Biology, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) Day is an annual event that showcases some of the exciting career choices and opportunities in science. It is designed to increase students’ awareness of real science jobs and encourage them to consider science pathways when selecting subjects at high school.
The 2023 event will be held at Curtin University on Sept 8th and here is the link for teachers to registration to receive the presentations selection for their groups. Please complete and return to the address indicated and share with your colleagues.
Perth NRM ‘Adopt A Beach Program’
Wayne Walters
Wayne Walters, Adopt A Beach Program Coordinator, from Perth Natural Resource Management (Perth NRM) outlines how his science education has influenced his career choices which centre around engaging students and community in understanding their environment. This includes creating marine snorkelling trails.
Biodiversity Educator, Science Communicator and Artist
Angela Rossen
Angela Rossen is an artist who works with scientists in three West Australian research institutions to bring their research and young career scientists out of the academy into schools and community settings. She delivers multidisciplinary workshops in biodiversity education with schools and community groups throughout Western Australia. Her presentation covers some of the pathways students can take in environmental conservation including a career in the sciences, teaching, the arts and or science communication. The multidisciplinary workplaces of the future will require flexibility, inspiration and determination. This presentation is relevant to anyone who wants to throw their energy into creating the green future our planet needs.
South East Regional Community Urban Landcare (SERCUL)
Natasha Bowden
Natasha Bowden is the Education and Promotion Manager for the South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare (SERCUL). She coordinates the Phosphorus Awareness Project, a program funded by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), and the Fertilise Wise and Mozzie Wise programs. As part of her role, she educates the community and school groups on a broad range of topics relating to waterways, plants and animals including nutrients, algae, aquatic weeds, fish, frogs, turtles, dragonflies and native plants. Museum of Moving Objects (MOMO)
Megan Mentz
Archaeology is a fascinating career and Megan Mentz shares how this field of study has enabled her to work on digs across Australia, learn about First Nations culture, manage museum collections and led to teaching Geography and History in secondary schools. Megan now delivers the Little Green Steps WA program to early years educators, bringing sustainability to their planning. Megan and a colleague deliver Museum of Moving Objects (MOMO) bringing archaeology to life for seniors, school children and local governments.
Aquaculture Research UWA
Isobel Sewell
Increasing sustainability in aquaculture through targeted research. Have you ever wondered where your fish comes from? Isobel Sewell discusses her research into finding out how the process of growing fish works, and the troubles the industry faces in terms of sustainability. Isobel also shares the many projects, places and the opportunity to learn techniques used by scientists to combat these issues.
Surface Operations
Benita
Benita wanted to increase her skills and branch out from being a truck driver on the mines. Completing the RII50115 Diploma of Surface Operations Management at North Metropolitan TAFE’s East Perth campus has helped her achieve this.
Electrotechnology
Jarrad
Jarrad enjoyed the technical aspect of previous jobs he had worked in. This led him to complete an apprenticeship in UEE30811 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician with Rio Tinto.
Dental Assisting

Michelle Gidgup studied a Certificate IV in Dental Assisting (HLT45015) at North Metropolitan TAFE’s Oral Health Centre in Nedlands.
Environmental Monitoring and Technology
Sonam
Sonam Wangchuk studied a MSS50216 Diploma of Environmental Monitoring and Technology at NMT’s East Perth campus. He is now completing a Master’s degree at ECU.
